Quantifying spectral characteristics of fricatives
نویسندگان
چکیده
In a search for spectral parameters that can be used to distinguish and to model fricatives, spectral moments, dynamic amplitude, and slope above maximum amplitude were computed for a fricative corpus including sustained fricatives at di erent e ort levels, and fricatives in vowel context. Moments varied signi cantly by frequency range used in computation. M3 appeared to vary the least across fricative, contrasting with Forrest et al.'s 1988 study. Dynamic amplitude separated sibilants and non-sibilants, as predicted; slope above the maximum amplitude varied signi cantly with e ort level.

Acoustic structure of fricative consonants in Greek
The present study examines the temporal and spectral characteristics of Greek fricatives (duration and spectral moments, i.e. mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis) as distinctive cues for their place of articulation. The effects of voicing, speaker’s gender and post-fricative vowel on both duration and spectral moments are also investigated. The results indicate that noise duration does not disti...
متن کاملA parametric study of the spectral characteristics of European Portuguese fricatives
Studies of Portuguese phonetics and phonology indicate that fricatives are central to some interesting features of the language, yet studies of Portuguese fricatives have been few and limited. In this study, Portuguese fricatives were analyzed in ways designed to enhance our description of the language and to increase our understanding of the production of fricatives. Corpora of Portuguese word...
متن کاملEstimation of Place of Articulation of Fricatives from Spectral Characteristics for Speech Training
A visual feedback of the place of articulation is considered to be useful for speech training aids for hearing-impaired children and for learners of second languages in helping them in improving pronunciation. For such applications, the relation between place of articulation of fricatives and their spectral characteristics is investigated using English fricatives available in the XRMB database,...
متن کاملAdding fricatives to the portuguese articulatory synthesiser
First attempts at incorporating models of frication into an articulatory synthesizer, with a modular and flexible design, are presented. Although the synthesizer allows the user to choose different combinations of source types, noise volume velocity sources have been used to generate turbulence. Preliminary results indicate that the model is capturing essential characteristics of the transfer f...
متن کاملEffects of Two Linguistically Proximal Varieties on the Spectral and Coarticulatory Properties of Fricatives: Evidence from Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek
Several studies have explored the acoustic structure of fricatives, yet there has been very little acoustic research on the effects of dialects on the production of fricatives. This article investigates the effects of two linguistically proximal Modern Greek dialects, Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek on the temporal, spectral, and coarticulatory properties of fricatives and aims to determine th...
